Hiking in Merano and environs

The Mecca for hiking tourists

Hiking in the Merano area is more varied and diverse than almost anywhere else in South Tyrol. Around the Hotel Kiendl, your hotel near Merano in South Tyrol, you will find around 500 kilometres of hiking trails. From easy walks to high alpine paths, you will find the most diverse routes for hiking in the Merano area. Whether you are an ambitious professional, a hobby sportsman or a pleasure hiker - Merano and environs are your hiking paradise, offering you wonderful moments in nature.

You can leave your equipment in our new activity room. A shoe dryer and lockable cupboards are available here. Of course you can also use the washing machine and dryer.

Here are a few exclusive hiking tips:

Pleasure hiking & "Waalweg" trails

In the Merano region, you can enjoy hiking as a pleasure hiker who prefers gentle tours. With the Merano Waalrunde you can circle the entire basin of the spa town or you can reach the centre of Merano via the Tappeinerweg. The Waalwege are also ideal for gentle hiking in the Merano region. Here you walk along the ancient irrigation canals through the orchards and vineyards.

Hike with small refreshment

Sometimes hiking in the Merano region can also be strenuous and you long for a little refreshment. A perfect hike in the Merano area is therefore the tour from Falzeben in the Merano 2000 hiking area to the Kratzberger lake. In the small mountain lake you can cool your feet and enjoy the wonderful panoramic view.
Or is the lake too cold for you and you just dip your little toe in it? The starting point of this hike in the Merano area is the Piffinger Köpfl, which you can reach with the Falzeben cable car or the Merano 2000 cable car. You orientate yourself by the marking 3 and then by the marking 4 until you reach the Kratzberger lake.

Castle walk followed by wine tasting

One of our favourite hikes in the Merano area is the castle hike followed by a wine tasting. You walk to the Labers Castle, which is about 15 minutes walk from the Hotel Kiendl. From there you continue your hike through beautiful orchards and vineyards to Rametz Castle. The grape varieties Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon have been grown here since 1860. From Monday to Friday you can take part in a tour of the Wine Museum and the Castle Cellars in the afternoon and then look forward to a competently guided wine tasting session. It begins in the vinotheque with the tasting of top quality plants and South Tyrolean Kaiserspeck. During the tour through the vineyards you will learn interesting facts about the work in the vineyard. You can return to the Hotel Kiendl by bus, which departs every 20 to 30 minutes and stops directly in front of Rametz Castle. This excursion is a perfect combination of hiking in the Merano area and informative information about wine growing in South Tyrol.

The bike path Passeier leads along the river Passer from Merano to the Val Passiria and is especially recommended if you spend your biking holiday near Merano with the whole family. You start on the Thermenplatz or at the train station of Merano and ride on a un-tarred path to San Leonardo in Passiria. Demanding tour to the Stettiner Hut at Eisjöchl

A demanding tour for mountain bikers, but with all the more rewarding views, is the tour to the Stettiner Hut on the Eisjöchl. The bike tour leads from Merano in the direction of Certosa/Karthaus and further on to the Stettiner Hut. This is the highest point of your tour. The descent leads to the Lazinser Alm and further to Pfelders. Attention: The descents are steep and should therefore be enjoyed with caution.
